Oh the ramblings of a 4 year old

There are a lot of times that I hear Cody say something and think, "I need to write that down." I can't justify an entire post for each comment so I have been adding to this post for a couple months. Every few months I will post the whole thing. They are good for a few laughs.

Here you go:

One morning after laying on the bed and watching cartoons with Cade so I could jump on the shower, Cody came up to me and said, "I am all sleeped out Mom." Clearly, he was ready to go outside and play.

He has had some really interesting dreams lately. He loves the movie Shark Boy and Lava Girl and it deals with dreaming a lot so he has been telling us about his dreams when he has one he feels is worth sharing. The other morning he told me I need to not take Daddy's cheese. I laughed and said sorry and we continued with our day. As we were eating dinner that night, very seriously Cody said to Chris, "Dad, if you want your cheese back you just have to say please and be nice. I told Mom not to take your Cheese anymore." He had gone the entire day thinking I actually took Chris's cheese.

My favorite dreams however, are the ones that he can't quit get out. He struggles the entire story-telling process. The only thing I can think it that he had a dream where something didn't make sense when it came time to tell, or he knows he is missing a key event somewhere.

Cody has a friend who lives up the road named Branson. Branson has diabetes. Branson's mom has educated me about diabetes and trained me to use his meter and pump that give him his doses of insulin. If he comes over to play for longer than 2-3 hours she will send his meter with me so I can check his blood sugar and dose him if necessary. Cody is trying really hard to understand the whole situation. It is hard to him to be ok with the fact that Branson can't have snacks while he is at our house, or he can't eat lunch with us unless his Mom packed it for him with instructions for me on how to give him his insulin. First, he used to call diabetes, diet-betes. and he still calls insulin, insalins. He informed me a few days ago, that Branson's diabetes said he could have a snack. On Tuesday Branson got to come to our house after preschool for a couple hours. Branson is always really good about asking before he eats anything and when I tell him he needs to wait til he gets home he never complains. He knows the rules. However... on Tuesday, the boys has been out on the bikes, and downstairs and in Cody's room playing. Branson was hiding from Cody in the pantry while Cody was going to the bathroom. After Cody got done I thought they had gone back out on the bikes, I was cleaning the kitchen (again) and went to grab my broom out of the pantry. The boys were both in there and scared me to death. I asked what they had eaten, they said nothing. I asked what was in Branson's hand, he pulled out a granola bar. They went out to play and I inspected the pantry for wrappers but didn't find anything. For those who don't know how diabetes works, if Branson were to eat a granola bar, his pancreas doesn't produce insulin to help break down the sugars like the rest of us, so every time he eats something he has to have enough insulin injected into his body to be able to break down those sugars otherwise his blood sugar level goes really high. I got an email from Branson's mom that night informing me that right before dinner she checked his blood sugar and it was at 420. Ideally, it should be between 150-250. When I had checked him right after school he was 320, but I dosed him appropriately. She began questioning him about why his level was so high. He finally caved and told her that he and Cody has snuck some granola bars and licorice! I felt SO bad! There aren't very many people she trusts with Branson and I let her down. Fortunately she wasn't upset and he has been back over since, but I had to sit Cody down and explain to him that Branson can get really sick if he eats stuff with out getting his insulin first. On the way to preschool the next day, the boys were in the back seat talking about Branson's meters and his pump and how he has to get poked a bunch of times a day. The look on Cody's face was hilarious. He HATES shots and to think that Branson used to get 5 shots a day and still has to have his finger poked multiple times a day is unimaginable to Cody. But, I I think he finally gets it.

One day this Summer, my friend Melanie had the idea to take the kids to a small hill nearby with some ice blocks and teach them how to go ice blocking. Cody loved it, even though he didn't stay on for very long each time. Now, whenever we drive by the little hill he tells me, "That's where we went ice cubing with Melanie!"

I am not sure if I already posted this one, but Cody used to call Cade, Ked. It almost sounded like he was saying Kid. So he would say, Hey Kid! instead of Hey Cade! He just rushed Cade's name too much.

Cody's prayers are pretty comical right now. It usually consists of blessing that we have a really good or great day at least twice. He always blesses that his friends can come over. And his Uncle Mikey will always be blessed to share the gospel no matter how long he has been home from his mission. One of my favorite lines was from a prayer right before we were headed to Boise this Spring and he blessed that the scooter place(classic skate) would still be here when we get back.

I was telling Cody today that his Grandma Lori is coming to visit this weekend and he said, "To have a sleepover?" I said yes. He asked if Papa Steveo was coming too. I said, no he has to stay home and work. He said, "And Grandma Lori doesn't work?" I explained that she does work just sometimes. (it was my best attempt at explaining she has different hours than him) He said, "but you don't work." I agreed. He said, "cause you're not a Grandma, you're a Mom."
It makes me laugh to hear how he really feels about things just from the way the sees it.

I dropped Cody and Branson off at preschool one day and as they were unloading out of the back seat Branson got out first and said, "Cody, jump to me. I'll catch you." So... of course Cody jumped and of course Branson fell. Cody bumped his shin on the concrete and started crying. I sat with him for a few seconds as he cried and tried to convince him to be tough and go to class. He wiped his eyes a few times, started crying again and said, "I don't want my school to see me crying." So we took a minute and got the crying out of his system so no one at school would see him crying.

Cody has been making up words lately. He thinks he can speak Spanish, and he has dreams about things called, "cracker-dogs."

On Saturday, we were getting the house cleaned up and had asked Cody to take something to the garbage. As he was walking away Chris said to me, "Oh by the way, Cody stinks and needs a bath." We heard this from the hallway, "I heard that, you two!" We just about died laughing!

Cody asked me about a week and a half ago if his potty was getting bigger. I didn't know what to say to I pretended like I didn't hear him and continued with what we were doing. 3 days later, he said to me again, "Mom, is my potty getting bigger." I had had a little time to think about it, but my response was still terrible. I explained that just like his arms, legs and head grow as he gets older, so does his potty. 2 nights ago, we were laying in my bed playing games on Chris's phone when he lifted up the waist line of his pajamas and said, "see Mom, it IS bigger." I knew I had to stop him, so I poked and prodded to find out who told him that or where he heard it but this is what he keeps telling me, "no one told me Mom, I just know it." I wasn't ready for this for at least another 10 years!

After coming back from the Oregon Coast, Cody came into my room 2 days later right after he woke up and said, "Mom, I want to go back to the American Coast." I laughed and said where? Realizing he said it wrong he paused and then said, "You know!!... that place I caught lots of crabs!" He asked me 3 more times what it was called before preschool. I know he was preparing to tell his friends where he had been.

Cody loves to play in Cade's bed with him. One morning I had Cade standing up holding onto the side practicing his standing up and Cody walked in and said, "Mom!! Look!! He's standing up all by himself!" Cody is so excited for when Cade can walk around and play with him. Cody jumped in the crib with Cade and said he was going to protect him from falling. Every time Cade fell over Cody jumped up and helped Cade back onto his feet. He was wearing a spiderman outfit and he said, "Mom... Spiderman can do anything!"

Oregon Coast 2010

This last weekend we headed up North to Portland, Oregon. Every year growing up my family would go to the Oregon Coast for the Hayes Family Reunion. It was the only time every year we would see my Dad's family. I remember lots of late nights and laughs with my cousins.

2 years ago we went to the Coast with my Mom's sister's family and had a blast. This year was more difficult because we were coming from Utah and we had another child with us. We flew instead of driving because of the distance which required packing super light! I knew we could technically check 6 bags between all of us but that would mean we'd have to pack it all around with us and fit it in the rental car. I did the best I could and managed to pack Cody, Cade and I into 1 medium and 2 small suitcases with Cody's little spiderman suitcase full of toys and activities and my diaper bag.

The trip there was interesting. Our flight was delayed over an hour, then we had mechanical difficulties had to return to the gate to get them fixed and then we were off. My parents were waiting for us at the airport with the rental car. We loaded up and made the 2 hour drive to Rockaway Beach. The boys were both sacked out in the car.

Thursday morning my mom headed in to town to pick Abby up from the airport but she missed her flight so Thursday everyone but Mom and Abby got up and went to breakfast. The boys headed out on the boat to catch us some crab. Stacy, Cade and I stayed at the hotel room while the boys were out and my mom was getting Abby. The boys came back with a few crab from their trip. We all went swimming down at the pool at the hotel for a while waiting for Mom and Abby to get back. They didn't get back til around 7 so we decided to cook the crab, throw a huge steak my dad brought on the grill with a salad and some delicious grilled potatoes and onions. It was amazing! Cody and my Dad built a big bonfire out on the beach that night.

Cody and my Mom found a jellyfish one day and Cody tore him to pieces.

Friday morning, my Mom and Dad took the boys down to the Ocean (it was right out our back door) for about an hour. Cody was in Heaven!! He is such a boy when it comes to that kind of stuff. He had two pairs of water boots and each pair had to be put under the blow dryer each day. We had breakfast at a different place Friday and then we all headed out to the boat to go crabbing. It was the only day of our trip that it didn't rain so we took advantage of it. Cody was hilarious to watch on the boat. His job was to grab the small crabs that came in with each pot and throw them back into the Ocean. He took it very seriously. My Dad said that the first day he was watching Cody help Chris but that Chris told Cody not to touch the crabs because he didn't have gloves on. A couple minutes later Cody came to the front of the boat out of Chris's hearing range and said, "Papa Doug, my hands are cold." He is so smart. It makes me laugh that he couldn't just ask for a pair of gloves so he could play with the crabs, he had to make up an excuse to get the gloves. After about an hour on the boat, Stacy and I were both sea sick so we headed back in. Unfortunately while I was driving the boat, I went through some seaweed and in got stuck in the intake in the engine(I think) so it too us a while to get back. Eventually the boys were able to fix it. While the boys and Abby went back out to continue their quest for more crab my Mom, Stacy, Cade and I went into Tillamook for a little shopping. The boys finished crabbing kind of early because the BSU game started at 6 that night. Everyone but Chris went swimming (he was watching the BSU game and didn't bring swim trunks). After the little boys were fed and in bed, and the big boys were fed and watching the football game my Mom, Stacy and I went across the road to a little restaurant/bar for dinner.

Saturday morning, we all went down to the ocean where my dad was starting another bonfire. We roasted smores and fed the seagulls while Cody played in the sand. It was perfect to sit out by the ocean with the fire. At one point, Cody dumped his entire bag of bread crumbs in the same spot and when the seagulls all came to get them he would run after them. He thought he was pretty funny. After the bonfire we all drove to Netarts Bay, one of my Dad's favorite places on the Coast, for breakfast. Our server made the experience... memorable. The food was good though :) After breakfast we split up and the boys went crabbing for the last time while Stacy and I walked around town. We found a great little pizza place and a "thrift boutique". I don't think those two words should be allowed next to each other. We all met back up at the hotel to go swimming one last time. While we were in the pool we all decided to run down and jump in the ocean. We used to do it all the time when we were kids. So, my Dad, Cody, Abby and I all ran down to the ocean. Stacy followed us with the camera and Chris had the video camera but he didn't really record anything. After jumping in, we ran back up and hopped in the pool to warm up before getting right into the hot tub.
After the pool we all showered and headed to the Pirate Cove for dinner. Chris stayed at the hotel room with Cody and Cade since they were sleeping. After dinner we dropped Abby and BJ off at the hotel room and my Mom, Dad, Stacy and I went down across the road to play Bingo. We only caught the last half hour but it was so much fun!

Sunday morning we all woke up a little late. We hurried to load up our stuff and get on the road. Some of my cousins were able to meet us for lunch. They are my Dad's brother Dan's kids. Nathan, Stephanie and Tim. The last time we saw them all was at Steph's wedding June 2008. Since then, Stephanie and David had a little girl and are pregnant with their second little girl and Nate and his fiance had a baby in June of this year. It was so good to get to see everyone.

We headed to the airport after lunch. Unfortunately, we had more mechanical problems. This time they had to unload ALL of the cargo to get to the problem and then reload everything once it was fixed. Fortunately, they let us off the plane while they were fixing it. The boys and I got off the plane and headed to the play area while we waited with Stacy and BJ. I am REALLY glad we got off because Cade had a stinky diaper shortly after we got off and Cody had diarrhea and tried to toot but got more than he bargained for. I would not want to have to clean that up while on an airplane.
I was very relieved to get home that night. I started 2 loads of laundry right away because everything had to be washed that was in a suitcase. Everything smelled like crab.

Monday morning when I went into Cade's room and he had thrown up all over himself. He didn't act like he was sick so I still fed him breakfast and gave him part of a bottle. I regretted that about 20 minutes later when it all came back up on me. So, between the laundry from the trip, Cade's laundry from that day and snuggling a sick baby, I didn't get much done. I am happy to be caught up now and Cade is on the mend.
