I don't really know how to start this post. I wasn't expecting to have so much to report after having giving birth to my second child. Especially since he was born at 39 weeks! I was scheduled to be induced on Tuesday the 23rd but I never thought I was actually going to go that far since my water broke on its own with Cody at 38 weeks. By about 38 weeks and 2 days however, I had given up. I knew he wasn't coming on his own and I that I would have to be induced. In the first part of my pregnancy I really didn't think I would be induced if it came to that but by the end I was in so much pain and wasn't sleeping that there was no changing my mind. We found out about 9 pm on Monday that we were scheduled for 6:30 am!!! I think I slept 3 hours that night!
We were at the hospital at 6:45 Tuesday morning. They got me checked in and set up with the IV in by 8 am. They started the
pitocin and
ampicillin (because I tested positive for group b strep) at 8 am. My nurse told me that they needed to get two doses of the
ampicillin in me before I delivered and that they needed to be 4 hours apart so they would pace the
pitocin accordingly. So I knew I wouldn't have him before noon. At 8:30 she came back in the room and since I could tell the
pitocin was definitely getting the job done I decided to just get the epidural early. I think I waited longer than I needed to with Cody and it took longer to get him here. They started the extra bags of fluid at 8:30 and called the anesthesiologist. He was in the room about 8:50 getting things set up. Cody and Chris went out in the hall because I didn't need Chris passing out that early. Unfortunately it took 2 tries to get the epidural in, fortunately I got it early enough into labor that I was able to stay relaxed during the whole thing. It wasn't painful at the time but now my back is REALLY sore and bruised, he did say that he kept hitting bone on the second one so I think that is most of it. After I got the epidural I laid down and slept for a few minutes because I started feeling a little nauseous. When I got to the hospital I was dilated to a 2.5, after the epidural I was at a 4. I was able to just hang out for a couple hours and relax. The best part of the morning was the drug button they gave me, if I felt pain I could push the button and it would give me an extra shot of numbing
meds! LOVED THAT! I hit it at 10, 11 and then 12. My Dr came in to break my water at noon and right after that
Cade's heart rate started going down. Nothing too serious, just enough that they were monitoring it closely. It would drop with each contraction and then level out where normally they like it to spike a little and then level out with each contraction. After an hour of watching it they decided to do an
amniotransfusion... basically replacing the fluid I was losing from breaking my water to make the baby float again and see if maybe the cord was being pinched. As they started that at 1 I hit the drug button again :) When they laid me down to start the
amniotransfusion I suddenly felt like I was going to throw up so they sat me and let me lose my lunch and then we began again. However, I was now at a ten and baby was coming. :) I was very happy about that because I was starting to feel like I had made the wrong decision by being induced. I pushed the
drup button one last time as they were setting every thing up for the delivery just so I would KNOW I wasn't going to feel anything this time around. I highly recommend it! I pushed through 4 contractions and out came baby at 1:51 pm. Pretty to similar to how it was with Cody.
They took
Cade over to clean him off and start his tests but he was breathing funny and his cry had a gargling sound to it. They figured he had swallowed some blood on the way out so they wrapped him up, let me hold him for a few minutes and then took him to the nursery. His nurse said he would most likely resolve the issues on his own but they wanted to be able to watch him.
Two and a half hours later, he was still in the nursery and was under an oxygen dome thing helping him get more pure oxygen. He was grunting pretty hard with every breath and clearly having to work really hard to get air. They wheeled my into the nursery as we switched rooms so I could see him but I couldn't hold him. He wasn't under the oxygen dome anymore but was still working really hard. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to resolve the issue on his own so they had to take him to the Special Care Nursery and put him on a nasal
CPAP machine. It basically had tubes in his nose sending high pressure oxygen into his lungs and a tube down his throat into his stomach to release any extra oxygen and the stuff that he had swallowed on the way out. It was not a comforting sight. They also had to hook him up to an IV of Dextrose since he had the tube in his stomach.
He stayed in the Special Care Nursery the entire time we were at the hospital. It was very hard to handle. I know it could have been worse but it was still hard.
Cody had been playing at his cousin Kimball's house, so Chris left about 9 to go get him and go home so they could get a good nights sleep. I got to hold
Cade for the first time since right after he was born at 2 am. I had been crying since Chris left and I think the nurse could tell I just needed to hold my baby. He was hooked up to all his machines so it was tricky holding him but it helped me calm down and ironically his breathing slowed a lot in the next few hours, enough that they were able to take him off the
CPAP but 11:3o the next morning. They were watching 3 different things... his oxygen saturation, his breaths per minute and his heart rate. After being removed from the
CPAP he was able to keep his oxygen saturation at around 97 out of 100% and his breathing stayed under 60 breaths per minutes which is what they need it to be under.
At 5 pm that night I finally got to feed him. I had been building a small storage over the 24 hours before that. He ate really well through the night so the next morning when his Pediatrician came in he said we were good to start weaning him off his IV. I didn't realized however that this was going to be at least a 24 hour process. I was SO sick of the hospital by this point. When the pediatrician saw how disappointed I was that I wasn't going to be taking him home that day he said that since he had eaten so well during the night that they would speed up the weaning process by one point every successful feeding. We started at 14 somethings of Dextrose and normally with every successful feeding the go down 2 points but he said he'd let us go 3 as long as he was able to keep his blood sugar above 60. The nurse recommended supplementing with a little formula to make sure he stayed above 60 so I did but it was nice because we
didnt have to use a bottle, instead we used a syringe to squirt the formula in while I was feeding him.
I was supposed to be discharged at 1:50 pm but when my nurse came in to do my last set of vitals my blood pressure was 155/118 and I had a fever apparently. I was crushed! They weren't going to discharge me! All I could think about was taking a shower in my own shower and laying on my own bed even for a minute. They monitored me for an hour or so and my blood pressure went down to like 135/85
ish and they had taken some blood for labs that came back fine so they decided to let me go. It was now like 4 pm though so I sent Chris to the store to get me some shampoo and conditioner because I needed to be with
Cade. He was keeping his blood sugar up with each feeding and we were getting closer.
Chris took Cody home at 6:30 where his sister Marissa had a nice home cooked dinner for them. Chris put Cody in bed and
BJ(Stacy's new hubby, they cut their honeymoon short and came to see us!) stayed with Cody so Chris could come back and wait with me. At 11:55 p.m. we were all discharged!!!! He had kept his numbers where they needed to be and we were on our way home! It was so nice!
We got home around 12:15 and I went to put
Cade in bed but realized I didn't know how he liked to sleep or if he needed the light on or anything! He had been in the Special Care Nursery the WHOLE time! I only got to change 1 diaper in his first 3 days. So... since it was now 1:30 a.m. he slept in our bed with us on his
boppy pillow and I got a GREAT nights sleep.
Cody was THRILLED to see his baby brother at home the next morning. All 4 of us stayed in bed until 11:30 when it was time to start getting ready for preschool. Chris took Cody to school, and
Cade and I headed to my Dr.
appt. We both had to go get checked the next day since they discharged us earlier than they wanted to. I passed my blood pressure test BARELY and
Cade looked GREAT at his check up.
Like I said, a lot more to the story than I thought I was going to be posting. Cody's was so normal.
We have been having a BLAST these last two weeks! And now that I have this post finished I can start posting on what else we've been up to. Believe it or not we just got back from our first road trip with 2 kids!
